Description

The Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services is responsible for assisting local bar associations, legal services programs and other groups who offer pro bono services in the Commonwealth.  In addition to providing support and assistance in the development of pro bono programs where none currently exist, the Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services will help providers to improve pro bono legal services that are now being offered.  Additional responsibilities include serving as a clearinghouse for information about pro bono programs, planning and staffing PBA Pro Bono events, serving as PBA liaison as needed in place of the Director of Pro Bono Services, and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In addition to performing any duties that may be assigned by the Director of Pro Bono Services, the Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services is responsible for the following:

1. Work with local bar associations and other pro bono providers to assist in the design and development of programs in areas of the Commonwealth where none exist, as well as supporting pro bono recognition throughout the Commonwealth in collaboration with county bar associations, legal aid programs, and other appropriate pro bono partners.
2. Assist county bar associations and other pro bono providers to improve current programs.
3. Offer a statewide perspective on pro bono and the types of services that are available.
4. Serve as a clearinghouse for information and ideas on pro bono programs that have been developed in the Commonwealth and elsewhere.
5. Help with the development and delivery of education and training programs for local pro bono providers.
6. Plan and staff PBA Pro Bono events.
7. Assist county bar associations and other entities to identify sources of funding for pro bono programs. (The Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services will not be responsible for filing applications for funding on behalf of county bar associations or other pro bono providers.)
8. Work with county bar associations and other pro bono providers to help identify private attorneys who will agree to provide pro bono services.
9. Work closely with the PBA Legal Services to the Public Committee and all other Committees and Sections of the PBA that develop and promote pro bono programs.
10. Assist the Director of Pro Bono Services and the Pro Bono Specialist with administering the Pennsylvania Wills for Heroes Program, including attending events in-person in Eastern PA and as needed.
11. Promote Pennsylvania Free Legal Answers to PBA members and county bar associations.
12. Post cases to PA Pro Bono Matters. Respond to emails and phone calls inquiries to the PBA requesting the PBA’s help with legal issues.
13. Support the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation efforts in Pro Bono Programing.
14. Act as a liaison between the PBA and both PA IOLTA and Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network.
15. Conduct legal clinics in collaboration with PBA and legal aid pro bono projects.
16. Plan and conduct CLEs on Pro Bono topics. 

Qualifications:   

1. Active PA state law license.
2. Some legal aid background preferred, i.e. documented pro bono service or legal aid professional staff experience.
3. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
4. Familiarity with MS Office, SharePoint, and virtual meeting technology.
5. Bar Association experience preferred but not required.
6. Experience with organizations that work with and recruit volunteers.

Essential Functions:

1. Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to make oral presentations before groups as required.
2. Ability to communicate virtually using the latest technology.
3. Ability to travel as required.
4. Ability to plan, promote and staff a variety of Pro Bono and PBA events.
